a custom among many patrilineal societies, including the ancient Jews and other Semitic peoples, of binding the brother or nearest patrilineal kinsman of a dead man under certain circumstances to cohabit with his widow, in order to beget children who will be designated legally begotten offspring of the deceased (in the Bible, Deuteronomy 25:5-10).
